My name is Travers, and I'm the artist behind Woodlander Glass. I've been working with glass off and on since 2005. I'm a flame worker specializing in borosilicate encasement. In particular, I've spent a lot of time developing a method for making fully three dimensional encased trees.

My process is modeled after painting. I mix colors and pulling them down into small cane or stringers. I then apply the colors to a clear rod and build up the image mark by mark and fill the negative space with clear as I go. The work requires a lot of precision and care because every mark I make gets magnified once it's under clear. While I use the analogy of painting, glass is a very different kind of medium with it's own unique challenges. So in practice, the process is more like a mix between painting and sculpting.

I like working with borosilicate because it is relatively new in the world of glass art, and it seems like artists can take it in new directions compared to traditional soft glass. I'm interested in exploring what new things can be encased using boro. The finished product in boro is also a bit less fragile, and I am attracted to the idea of good glass art that people can carry with them in their pocket or handbag. Being able to carry the art fundamentally changes the way folks can relate to it, and I think that's pretty cool.
